St. Peter’s Weekly News
December 2, 2015
Soup, Salad and Song: This Saturday, December 5 at 5:30 p.m. We will gather in the parish hall and enjoy some homemade soups, salads, and desserts and sing our favorite Christmas carols. Bring your family and friends for this great holiday tradition!
Advent Lessons and Carols Service: will take place THIS Sunday at 10:00 a.m. This service is based on one that has been sung annually since 1918 at King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, England. Through music and Scripture readings, the service explores the meaning of the season: the longing for the Messiah and the realization of that hope found in the Incarnation of Christ.
Panera Bread: This Sunday is our Panera Bread “Bucks for Builders — Yummies for You” day. Help build a better world by supporting St. Peter’s pledge to the U.N. Millenium Development Goals and take home some Panera bread or pastry as a “thank you”!
Adult Forum: Join us in Advent as we visit with the Advent Saints! St. Andrew, St. Nicholas, St. Lucy and St. Thomas will be the focus of this four week series. Come find out about these unique individuals as we take time to reflect and celebrate the season. We will meet in the Library at 9:00am on Sundays.
Lectionary Bible Study: This week, we anticipate with Advent Lessons and Carols, a custom begun at Truro Cathedral in Victorian England. The readings from Isaiah, Jeremiah, Zechariah, and Haggai lead us to the angel Gabriel’s promises to Mary. The words are familiar and we will dig deeper to see what they tell us for today. Bring your observations and questions (and snacks), and join us for a lively discussion around the lectionary texts in the library after the 10 am service.
Christmas Pageant Rehearsals: It is that time of year again. We are fast approaching the holidays and it is time for us to begin rehearsing the Christmas Pageant! There will be 3 rehearsals before the Pageant which takes place on Christmas Eve at the 5:00 pm service.
- Saturday, December 5 at 10:00 am – We will meet in the Parish Hall to read that Christmas Story and assign parts before we begin rehearsing the motions of the pageant.
- Sunday, December 13 immediately after the 10:00 am service.
- Sunday, December 20 immediately after the service will be our Dress Rehearsal.
Mary Pat’s Cookies: Join us on for this holiday tradition as we make Christmas packages for our homebound members. Please plan to bake a batch of cookies so you can add to the bounty. This year, cookies will be packed on Saturday, December 12, in the church kitchen, starting at 9:30a.m. We will set up cookies and cards for delivery Saturday and Sunday. You may start leaving your donations in the kitchen on Friday, December 11.
Photo Board Updates: If you would like to add your photograph to our church member photo board, change your current photo, or update your family photo, we will provide that opportunity on December 13. This will take place immediately after the 10:00 service in the church. Children can have their photo taken before Christmas pageant rehearsal begins.
Volunteer Needed to Deliver to Food Cupboard: Each Sunday, donated, non-perishable food is carried to the altar at the Offertory. About twice a month, the food needs to be delivered to the food cupboard at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Abington, between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. any week day. (http://www.holytrinity.net/) If you would like to take on this ministry, please contact Shirley Smith or Carol Boyle. The Social Concerns Team sincerely thanks Richard DeKalb for his years of kind service delivering the food to the food cupboard. We are truly grateful.
Pledge cards: If you have not as yet filled out and turned in your 2016 pledge card, please take the time to do so. Every gift counts! Every pledge makes a difference in the life of our community! You may put your card in the offertory plate or in Patty McDonough’s mailbox. Extra cards can be obtained by contacting the church office. Thank you to all who have already made a commitment!
Rector’s Discretionary Fund: Over the past week I have received five phone calls from people who didn’t have enough food for their families. My discretionary fund allows me to respond to the needs of those in our community. However, because I am receiving so many requests, my fund is lower than usual at this time of year. During the holiday season Patty and I give out many Giant gift cards. Any donations to this fund would be most appreciated. If you prefer, you could purchase $30-50 gift cards and give them to Patty or me. Thank you for your generosity! Emily+
