St. Peter’s Weekly News

November 30, 2016

Remembering Our Friend: Longtime member of St. Peter’s, Pat Schaphorst died peacefully on November 25, 2016. There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate her life on Saturday, December 10 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Cathedral Village. Please keep Pat’s beloved husband Dick and her entire family in your prayers. Rest eternal grant to Pat, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her.

Advent Lessons and Carols Service: will take place this Sunday at 10:00 a.m. This service is based on one that has been sung annually since 1918 at King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, England. Through music and Scripture readings, the service explores the meaning of the season: the longing for the Messiah and the realization of that hope found in the Incarnation of Christ.

Panera Bread: This Sunday is our Panera Bread “Bucks for Brains – Yummies for You” day. Stop by the Panera bread table in the Parish Hall.  Make a donation that will be shared between scholarships for the youth of Guatemala and funding for research into the cause and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.  Then, take home some Panera bread or pastry!

Christmas Pageant Rehearsals:  It is that time of year again.  We are fast approaching the holidays and it is time for us to begin rehearsing the Christmas Pageant! There will be 3 rehearsals before the Pageant which takes place on Christmas Eve at the 5:00 pm service.  All rehearsals this year will take place immediately following the 10 a.m. service on December 4, 11 and 18. Thanks, Shannon

Children’s Choir: We will be having our Children’s Choir sing for the St. Nicholas Day service on Dec. 11 and for the Christmas Pageant on Christmas Eve.  We will rehearse immediately after church on December 4, 11 & 18 as part of our Christmas Pageant rehearsal.  I can send the music to you along with YouTube clips so that you can practice at home.  Please contact me at if you would like to receive these rehearsal aids.  This is a great opportunity for your children to lead the congregation in worship. Tim Brown.

Lectionary Bible Study: This week, Isaiah is still seeing his prophecies. Jeremiah, Haggai, and Zechariah join in with their own pictures. What pictures will you see when you hear their words? Lessons and Carols is full of pictures. Bring your observations, questions, and snacks as we probe this week’s readings in the library after the 10 am service; “so that by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.”

Women’s Group Christmas Dinner & Gift Exchange: Please join your fellow women for a shared Christmas meal and hilarious gift exchange, Friday, Dec 9th at 6:00 pm in the Parish Hall. It is a fun evening! For details, call Polly Sanford at 215-576-1680. We hope you can join in!

Mary Pat’s Cookies:  Join us on for this holiday tradition as we make Christmas packages for our homebound members. Please plan to bake a batch of cookies so you can add to the bounty. This year, cookies will be packed on Saturday, December 10 in the church kitchen, starting at 9:30a.m. We will set up cookies and cards for delivery Saturday and Sunday. You may start leaving your donations in the kitchen on Friday, December 11.

Mitten Tree: A long time tradition at St. Philip’s was the decorating of the Mitten Tree with mittens, hats, gloves & scarves, both handmade & store bought.  The tree will be out from Advent through the New Year.  All donated items are sent to either ECS or Mattie Dixon Shelter in Ambler. Thank you for your contribution, Connie Clinefelter.

Pledge cards: If you have not as yet filled out and turned in your 2017 pledge card, please take the time to do so.  Every gift counts! Every pledge makes a difference in the life of our community! You may put your card in the offertory plate or in Patty McDonough’s mailbox.  Extra cards can be obtained by contacting the church office.  Thank you to all who have already made a commitment!

Rector’s Discretionary Fund: My discretionary fund allows me to respond to the needs of those in our community.  During the holiday season Patty and I give out many Giant gift cards.  Any donations to this fund would be most appreciated. If you prefer, you could purchase $30-50 gift cards and give them to Patty or me. Thank you for your generosity! Emily+
