A New Partnership
It is with joy that I announce a new a partnership between St. Peter’s and On Gracie’s Wings Foundation. On Gracie’s Wings was established in response to the tragic and untimely death of Grace Packer, a student at Abington Junior High School. The Foundation helps foster children and families through Gracie’s Closet and through a scholarship fund in honor of Grace. I first learned about this organization through Jack Wilbur whose daughter Jackie Schwanbeck is one of its founding members. I participated in the Memorial Service for Grace in January and began developing a relationship with Jackie and the other moms who created this foundation. Our parish supported On Gracie’s Wings through our Night at the Races Fundraiser and our special Easter offering and collection of items for the Closet.
After intentional conversations with their Board we discerned together that they needed a more permanent home for their new ministry and we had the space to share with them. St. Peter’s will become this home for On Gracie’s Wings and Gracie’s Closet. The Thrift Shop will be transformed into Gracie’s Closet at the end of the year and will have hours when foster families and kids can come and shop for clothes, toiletries and other much needed items. They will use our library for their board meetings and our Parish Hall for their annual fundraisers and scholarship receptions. We will receive monetary support from them for using both the Thrift Shop space and Parish Hall. Also, a special bench and plaque in memory of Grace will be placed in our Memorial Courtyard in which members of the Glenside community can come and remember Grace along with our beloved souls.
I want to offer special thanks to Jack Wilbur for helping us to make this initial connection, to Patty McDonough who worked hard this summer to finalize the partnership, to Deacon Pat for participating in these important conversations and to our Vestry who gave their enthusiastic support all along the way.
I believe that this is an exciting new way God is calling us to be engaged with our community, seeking and serving Christ among the children and families of our own neighborhoods.
Finally, I ask for your prayers as we begin this journey and for the bonds of fellowship and love we are being invited to develop through this partnership.
With great joy and hope,
